Councillor Simon Murray has been re-elected as Mayor of Armidale Regional Council for the next 12 months, with Cr Libby Martin chosen as his new deputy.

Cr Murray was elected in a ballot which was also contested by Cr Ian Tiley.

“I’m grateful for the confidence shown by the other councillors in electing me for a second term,” Cr Murray said.

“We have some big challenges ahead, particularly the ongoing drought and serious town water shortages, but I’m honoured to be able to remain at the helm during these tough times.

“Our Council has achieved a great deal during my initial two years as Mayor, working hand in hand with our community, and I’m looking forward to continuing that momentum, despite the obstacles before us.”

Cr Murray acknowledged the contribution of Cr Dorothy Robinson during her two years as Deputy Mayor.

“Cr Martin will be a tremendous asset as the new Deputy Mayor and I believe we’ll make a great team to keep moving this Council and the region towards an ever stronger position,” he said.

The ballot for Deputy Mayor was contested by Cr Martin and Cr Peter Bailey.

Cr Martin said she was excited about stepping up to the Deputy Mayor’s role for the remaining 12 months of the current panel of councillors.

“Good strategic planning, wise decision making and closer cooperation with business and the wider community during the past two years have set a strong platform for us to build upon,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to being at the heart of the action as we capitalise on this potential.”
