Supporting recovery from bushfires six months on

Published on 13 September 2019

Six months after a bushfire or major emergency is often a major milestone for impacted communities. It’s when people start to realise there is still so much recovery work to do, which can lead to fatigue.

Clinical Psychologist David Younger is currently working with bushfire affected communities across Gippsland providing a series of free, open-door community discussions.

The first two sessions have taken place in Labertouche and Drouin with more upcoming sessions planned for other areas in Gippsland. All community members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Session details

Upcoming sessions will run from 6.30pm - 9.00pm on:

Friday 20 September at Moe Library Thursday 26 September at Rawson Cricket Club

David Younger has worked closely with a number of Victorian communities recovering from bushfires and natural disasters since 2009. He is a consultant psychologist to the Department of Health and Human Services and is a trauma and disaster recovery expert.

All community members are also encouraged to consider accessing other the free support on offer in the region.

The bushfire case support program, established by the Victorian Government, continues to help people navigate the support services available.

To date, the program has worked with over 730 households. Community members can access mental health services; family violence support; and services for repairing and rebuilding damaged properties.

The bushfire case support program can be accessed by phone on 1800 560 760.

Quotes attributable to Clinical Psychologist David Younger

“Experience tells us that around the six-month mark people start to feel tired and sometimes irritable and angry from the physical and emotional turmoil they’ve experienced.”

“While many people seek support early, there are those who may be isolated and feel disconnected. If you know someone who is struggling, it’s a good idea to check in on them to see if they are ok.”

“Conversations about traumatic events and how people are coping can feel uncomfortable, but it’s important to let people know you are there for them. Sometimes, just giving people an opportunity to feel heard is enough to make a big difference.”

Quotes attributable to Mayor Cr Mikaela Power

“In addition to the upcoming sessions with David, for anyone who is struggling to cope and needs additional support, or if you have questions about clean up, please call 1800 560 760 for assistance and information”

“I encourage anyone impacted by the recent bushfires to come along to a remaining session, or if you prefer, to call and ask about the support services available.”
