Mosman win for accessibility

Mosman’s Access and Mobility Committee has secured funding for new accessible toilets at Mosman Junction under the NSW Government’s ‘My Community Project’ program.

The 2019 program invited residents to apply for funding for projects that would benefit their local community in one or more of six categories: accessibility, culture, health, liveability, revitalisation and safety.

Projects that met the selection criteria were put up online for a public vote, and the ones from each NSW electorate that received the most support from local residents received funding.

The new accessible facility will replace the old inaccessible toilets adjacent to the Raglan Street West carpark. The committee will receive $200,000 in funding from the program and Mosman Council, as sponsor, will deliver the project.

Member of the Access and Mobility Committee and Mosman resident Pip Friedrich, who organised the submission, said the committee was thrilled and the proposal’s success was the result of overwhelming support from Council, community organisations and residents.

“This result shows the best of community engagement at work. There was so much goodwill and support generated around this proposal. It was heartening to see how active and engaged so many residents are in their community,” she said.

Mosman Mayor Carolyn Corrigan, who also Chairs the Committee, said the new facility would be a hugely valuable addition to the area. “This will be a fantastic addition to Mosman’s accessible infrastructure. Accessible facilities are so important, especially for residents who are older and less mobile, and for our young families with small children and prams.

“Council is excited about delivering this project, and the benefits it will bring to the Mosman community.”

The project was one of 12 submitted from the North Shore electorate, and is one of 238 in NSW to receive funding under the ‘My Community Project’ program this year.

Work on the project is due to commence soon and the new facility is expected to be completed within 12 months.
