Time for a spring clean? Book your hard waste collection

Mattresses, old computers and furniture are often the first items we purge during a spring clean. Now is the perfect time to get an early start by booking in for your on-call hard waste collection.

Maroondah residents who pay a residential bin charge are entitled to two pre-booked collections per financial year, from 1 July to 30 June.

Councillor Mike Symon, Council’s representative on the Metropolitan Local Government Waste Forum, said hard rubbish collections were a valuable waste disposal and recycling service for Maroondah residents.

“Households with a residential waste service are entitled to two hard waste collections of up to two cubic metres per financial year, which can come in handy for those undertaking a winter cleanout,” Cr Symon said.

“A hard waste collection is a convenient way to dispose of items too big for regular household refuse disposal, or for items with specific disposal requirements, such as mattresses and E-waste such as TVs and whitegoods,” he said.

Cr Symon said booking a hard waste collection was a straightforward process.

“Residents can simply contact Council to make a booking, whether online, over the phone or in person at one of our service centres. They will then be advised of their allocated collection week.

“Collections begin on a Monday of that week, which gives residents the weekend to sort through their waste and place it on the nature strip, ready for collection. A pink ‘Booked collection’ sticker will also be sent out,” he said.

Bookings must be made before placing your waste on the nature strip, along with your pink ‘Booked’ sticker on an item in the pile, facing the street, letting Council know it is ready for pick-up and not illegally dumped.

Residents are also reminded that there are rules as to what is suitable for collection.

“While many large household waste items, including many metal items, are accepted, items must be able to be lifted by two people, and there are important exclusions, such as chemicals, gas bottles, garden waste and window glass. A full list of what can and can’t be collected is available on Council’s website,” Cr Symon said.

Hard waste collection tips Place mattresses to the side of the pile. If you’ve purchased a new mattress, place the plastic bag from your new mattress onto your old mattress before placing it out. Remove fridge and freezer doors Make sure there are no hazardous or unacceptable materials Place small, loose items in a non-returnable box (not in plastic bags) Put your pink ‘Booked’ sticker on an item in the pile, facing the street. If you don’t receive your sticker in time, items will still be collected.
