The intersection of Helen and Gostwyck Street in Newtown has re-opened following an upgrade by Toowoomba Regional Council as part of the Australian Government Blackspot Program.
Toowoomba Regional Council Chair of Infrastructure Committee, Cr Carol Taylor said the $560,000 upgrade project included the installation of a single lane roundabout and approaches at the intersection of Helen and Gostwyck Street, as well as new street lighting and relocation of public utilities.
“Improving the overall safety on roads throughout the region remains a key priority for Council,” Cr Taylor said.
“The upgrades to this intersection will significantly help improve traffic flow and provide a safer and more efficient movement of traffic.
“Council identified that the Helen and Gostwyck Street intersection required safety improvement and was successful in securing funding through the Australian Government Blackspot Program to undertake the works which we are very thankful for.
“We would also like to thank the community for their patience while the upgrade was completed.”
Over the past five years, three serious accidents were recorded at this intersection, prompting a need for safety improvements.
The National Road Safety Strategy provides funding through the Black Spot Program to reduce the incidents of crashes on local roads.
In total $460,000 was contributed through the Australian Government Blackspot Program and $100,000 was contributed by Toowoomba Regional Council.
