Still Life in Art

Fourteen local artists along with 42 other entries from across Australia are in the running to win $30,000 in Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery’s prestigious art prize Still: National Still Life Award 2019.

Still: National Still Life Award highlights the diversity and vitality of still life in Australian contemporary art practice, broadening the interpretation and meaning of this enduring genre.

“This year we are exploring why the still life genre is still so relevant in modern Australia. The Gallery will be hosting a range of free activities on Sunday September 22, to allow the community to understand and appreciate this form of art” said Cath Fogarty, Gallery Coordinator.

“Just as the Archibald Prize opens our minds about portraiture, Still makes us look twice at the world around us and the objects in our everyday lives.”

Free activities throughout the day include:

10am Coffee & Croissants Brunch Panel – Chaired by gallery curator Jo Besley the panel will discuss “STILL Relevant? Why art awards? Why still life?” and includes CEO of Museums & Galleries NSW Michael Rolfe; Sydney art collector Lisa Paulsen and the winning Still artist 11am Tabletop Workshop with Fran Callen @ The Library – Parents and children will enjoy this fun workshop telling the story of the moment through drawing and exploring everyday objects. 11am Paper Cutting and Layering Demo with Nicola Moss @ The Gallery – come and explore the concept of sustainability, focusing on possible futures where conservation and development find balance. 12noon Free Guided Tour – of the 2019 Still: National Still Life Award exhibition 1pm Machine Stitching Techniques Demo with Kelcie Bryant-Duguid – Kelcie is a multidisciplinary artist and her work is a response to the environment, events and issues that resonate with her. 2pm Free Guided Tour – of the 2019 Still: National Still Life Award exhibition

Everyone is also welcome to attend opening night on Saturday September 21, from 6-8pm where the winner of this year’s award will be announced.

Coffs Coast residents have the opportunity to vote for their favourite artwork in the $5,000 People’s Choice Award. Votes can be cast at the Gallery between 21 September and November 1.
