Draft Bendigo City Centre Plan available for public comment

A draft Bendigo City Centre Plan has been released for public comment.
Director Strategy and Growth Bernie O’Sullivan said the plan was developed to provide a vision and clear direction to manage the growth of the city and create a modern, compact, pedestrian-friendly city that embraced its rich heritage and responded to future needs.
“We want the Bendigo city centre to continue to grow as a vibrant regional centre in the future where people can live, work and visit, move around a safe environment, and enjoy more amenities and public spaces,” Mr O’Sullivan said.
“The Bendigo city centre is evolving and this plan provides a proactive approach to make existing planning controls less complex to promote high quality developments that complement and embrace the city’s rich heritage and culture.
“The draft plan is an update of the Bendigo CBD Plan 2005 and recommends design guidelines that can be incorporated into the Planning Scheme.
“With over $300M in Government projects starting construction in 2020 and a number of private sector investments being considered, this is a timely review to encourage well designed mixed-use development and ensure the community and visitors have a city that meets their needs now and in the future.”
A Parking Futures Action Plan is also part of the Draft Bendigo City Centre Plan to provide a holistic approach.
“Parking will continue to play an important role for many people, particularly those with limited mobility or transport options.
“We need to provide the right amount of car parking to support anticipated growth and demand but also accommodate other means such as walking, cycling, trains and buses.”
The proposed parking action plan includes completing investigations into the construction of a new mixed-use multi-deck car park in Market Street precinct and the reduction over time of surface level car parking.
