Children’s book classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar will be brought to life through sign language next week when the City of Ballarat celebrates National Week of Deaf People.
On Tuesday 24 September, the well-known story will be signed by deaf educator, artist and advocate Irene Holub at Council’s Little Languages program at the Ballarat Aquatic & Lifestyle Centre at 10.30am.
The free event will also mark the second International Day of Sign Languages (23 September).
Council’s weekly Little Languages program is an opportunity for young children and families to travel to a different country and culture in each session, learning and sharing through story, song and fun.
City of Ballarat Mayor Cr Samantha McIntosh said Tuesday’s event would be a celebration of deaf culture and language.
“There will be singing, fun activities and an opportunity to learn some basic sign language,” Cr McIntosh said.
“There will also be an Auslan interpreter on board who will be interpreting into spoken English.”
The Department of Health and Human Services provides funding for deafaccess workers in five community service organisations across rural Victoria, including the City of Ballarat.
These workers plan and develop strategies across the full range of community infrastructure, including education and training, transport, health, accommodation and housing, physical access planning, sport, recreation and the arts.
