Understanding dementia

The City held its first Be Dementia Aware event on Wednesday, September 18. This free event at Western Swan Home Support in Beechboro was an opportunity for community members to learn more about supporting people with dementia.

Around 40 people attended the event to learn how we can all play a part to reduce the stigma associated with this condition affecting over 447,000 Australians. Informative presentations from Alzheimer’s WA and Dementia Australia explained the impact on the person living with the disease and their carer. 

With knowledge and resources from Alzheimer’s WA and Dementia Australia we can better support those living with dementia and their carers. 

The City’s dementia specialised service, West Swan Club, supports eligible people with varying levels of forgetfulness and can provide transport to and from home. Held at Western Swan Home Support, the club offers a personal approach and provides activities in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

West Swan club members, who are experiencing forgetfulness or dementia, enjoy spending time with their friends and choosing how they will spend their day.  Spontaneity is encouraged so members will participate in club activities which could include music, singing, cooking and conversation.  They are welcome to enjoy bird watching at Hull Park or walk to Altone Park Shopping Centre for a haircut, newspaper or a few groceries.
