The Gympie Regional Gallery is pleased to announce its next major exhibition titled Stopping Time: Material prints from 3000BCE to Now, which is coming to the gallery from 25 September to 16 November.

The exhibition explores various forms of printmaking through the ages and demonstrates the power of print to suspend time; as a fleeting second captured by a shutter or by a skilful hand.

The exhibition’s curator, Professor Ross Woodrow, says the primary aim of the show is to make visitors aware of the importance of material images.

“In many ways the show is set up to teach audiences of all ages to read or re-read images as objects to be viewed, contemplated and enjoyed.”

“Some of the objects, such as the Mesopotamian cylinder seals, are 5000 years old, so they are some of the oldest image-making objects many people will ever see.”

“I particularly wanted the show to contain the full range of historical material, especially the works that generally never tour to regional centres.”

“With more than a hundred works that also include cylinder seals and seal rings from Greece and Rome, and medals and coins from antiquity to now, the exhibition will probably need several visits to fully appreciate its breath and depth,” he said.

There are loads of public programs planned for the duration of the exhibition, including a workshop by Brisbane-based artists Blair Coffey and Ali Bezer, and an artist talk by curator Ross Woodrow.

The gallery staff are excited to be bringing an exhibition of such high calibre to the region and they will be hosting an open day from 10am, Saturday 28 September.

Bring the whole family and explore lots of free pop-in arty activities to stretch your creativity, including printmaking, painting, drawing and collage.

Food and drinks will be available on the day.

This exhibition is being presented in partnership with Griffith University and Newcastle Art Gallery.
