Western Downs Regional Council is on the hunt for young, energized locals to ‘Kickstart their Career’ as a Council trainee or apprentice next year.
Applications are now open for next year’s intake of apprentices and trainees, with Council offering a further 16 positions across the organisation.
Council Spokesperson for Finance and Corporate Services Councillor Ian Rasmussen said Council was focused on its diverse and inclusive culture, specifically offering positions for people who identify as having a disability.
“Council offers a wide range of apprenticeships and traineeships, with positions varying from Business and Information Technology to Civil Construction, Mechanical Trade, Horticulture or even business trainees at our Cinemas,” Cr Rasmussen said.
“By providing full time and flexible opportunities, trainees and apprentices can study while they work while gaining invaluable on-the-job experience, with Council focusing on supporting our region’s youth and under-represented groups to obtain local employment.”
Nineteen-year-old Alicia Streten joined Council as part of the 2019 Kickstart Your Career Program and says Council has given her the confidence to try new things and hone her professional skills.
Alicia is currently completing a Certificate III in Library Services and has already gained experience in a range of areas including customer service, library processes, marketing, and design.
“I’ve had really good on-the-job experience with the people around me who have supported and nurtured me throughout my time with Council,” Alicia said.
“I’ve previously struggled to find a job because other employers found it difficult to cater to my needs, but Council really welcomed me with open arms.
“It’s definitely worth applying. Council is very supportive of all trainees.”
Council’s Early Career program has continued to nurture young professionals, with several trainees and apprentices going on to achieve Queensland awards for excellence over the past two years.
Applications are open until 5pm, 7 October, with successful applicants to commence in February 2020.
