Get ready for a morning packed with entertainment at the Get Ready Balonne Family Fun Day near the boat ramp on The Terrace, St George, on Sunday 13 October from 9am.
Balonne Shire Local Disaster Management Group chairman and Mayor Richard Marsh said this event, funded by the State Government’s Get Ready program, would combine fun with learning about emergency services and what they do during times of emergency.
“Council has a Honda EU22i Generator, valued at $2100, and a Stihl 18-inch bar MS251 chainsaw, valued at $799, to give away on the day as well as a handy first aid kit that can be kept in your car or backpack,” he said.
“To win the generator or chainsaw on the day, people will need to answer a few simple questions about being ready for an emergency and their name will go in the draw.
“On the day our team will have informational leaflets available at the Council stall which will provide you with all the answers you need.
“Answering the questions and putting your answers in the draw is the only way to participate in the draw for the generator or chainsaw.
“It’s important our residents are aware of what they need to have ready in times of need – such as emergency kit, household evacuation plan and awareness of what numbers to call.”
Cr Marsh said there also would be demonstrations of a kitchen fire, bushfire, SES boats, resuscitation and how to use the items in the free first aid kit.
“It won’t all be about emergencies though, we’ve organised entertainment for the kids with a giant slide and climbing wall, and there will also be market stalls, so there will be something for the whole family,” he said.
“The Rotary Club of St George will be cooking a free sausage sizzle and SunWater will give away drinking water. There will be soft drink available for purchase.
“Vital Health is joining the fun this year and will offer free blood pressure checks, heart rate checks and seated massages.
“Last year’s event was a great success and we look forward to seeing everyone there again.”
