Hats off to our winning young writers

The winners of our Young Writers Competition have been announced and we’re thrilled with the creative talent and hard work of all of our finalists.

Now in its tenth year, 2019’s theme was ‘wild’ and our finalists did not disappoint. From a ‘wild’ 90-year-old grandmother who believes she can compete in the Olympics to an uptight school librarian who in one author’s ‘wild’ imagination becomes a Russian agent, physicist and intrepid explorer, all of our finalists certainly put their own spin on the theme.

We spoke to our youngest winner Joshua Mether, Year 2 student at St Cecilia’s Catholic Primary School about his story Joshy and Livvy’s Wild Adventure.

Congratulations on winning the award Joshua! Did you think you were going to win?

I was so surprised I won but it was really exciting!

Your story is set in the “scary fierce jungle in the wilds of Africa” but then actually ends up being you and your little sister Livvy playing in your bedroom. What gave you the idea for your story?

Livvy and I play a lot together and are always going on adventures. I thought it would be a good idea for my story.

Where do you think you and Livvy might go on your next adventure?

We will probably go underwater. We will fight a shark and Livvy will talk to the angel fish.

Livvy has an awesome superpower in your story where she can talk to giraffes and gorillas. Do you think you will have a superpower next time?

I will be able to swim really fast!

Do you like writing stories and do you think you will write more?

I love writing stories and seeing my writing all nice and neat. I also like using my ideas and turning them into stories.
