Have you noticed your local park looking even more vibrant lately?

If so, it was probably one of the 47 parks Wyndham City upgraded last financial year, as part of Council’s $11.4 million Wyndham Parks 2021 project.

The 2018/19 stage of the program has now been completed, with Council planting 5,500 plants, paving almost 3,000 square metres of new walking paths and installing 70 park benches – to name just a few key highlights.

Wyndham City Mayor and Family Friendly City portfolio holder Cr Mia Shaw said the program was one of Council’s major initiatives to promote heathy lifestyles and make Wyndham’s neighbourhoods even better places to live.

“Parks play an essential role in allowing people to take time out from their busy lives and connect with nature,” Cr Shaw said.

“We know that spending time in your local park – whether for exercising, playing with your children or simply relaxing – can bring significant benefits to people’s mental and physical health.”

“That’s why I’m proud Wyndham City is upgrading 200 parks across the municipality by 2021.”

“Examples of parks that have recently been improved include Macquarie Drive Reserve in Wyndham Vale, which has a new playground and nature play equipment, picnic seats, a drinking fountain and freshly landscaped grass.”

“Over on the other side of the municipality, Hoppers Crossing residents will be able to make the most of the new walking path, seats, drinking fountain, and playground at Wilmington Avenue Reserve.”

“While W. Ison Reserve in Werribee has a new playground, nature play area, half-court basketball court, trees, a habitat garden to provide a home to wildlife and seats.”

Local resident Lindsay Ison’s family has been living in Werribee for six generations, and W. Ison Reserve was named after his family.

To this day, Mr Ison lives adjacent to W. Ison Reserve and regularly takes his grandchildren to play there, including grandson Slater Taylor.

Mr Ison said he was happy with the park upgrades.

“It’s good, I try to get out every second day and walk laps around the park,” Mr Ison said.

“I can also sit in the seat and watch the kids play.”

The 2019/20 stage of the Wyndham Parks 2021 program is now well underway, with even more parks set for exciting improvements.

The $11.4 million Wyndham Parks 2021 project consists of a total of 200 parks being upgraded over a four-year period, finishing in 2021.
