Creative students design new public bike racks

Bike rack concept designs drafted by four Cowaramup Primary School students will be constructed and installed in the townsite’s CBD by the end of the year.

Lachie Kirkham, Lucas McCarthy, Lily Koehler and Brooke Guyer each won the opportunity to have their designs translated into shop drawings for construction when they entered a school competition calling for creative bike parking ideas.

Shire President Pam Townshend and Vice President Julia Meldrum judged the entries, which worked to a brief set by the Shire of Augusta Margaret River.  

“The project brief ask students to provide concept designs and artistic impressions of bicycle parking facilities for Cowaramup, with a defined colour scheme, and able to hold at least two bikes,” Cr Townshend said.

“The ideas we got back from students were diverse and fantastic, with the winning designs being chosen for their practicality, creativity, and suitability for the local context in Cowaramup.

“Thank you to all the students who works so hard on their ideas, and a special congratulations to the final four.”

As well as having their bike rack designs brought to construction fruition, winners also received a book voucher and certificate.

The Shire will be collaborating with local community groups and trades to construct the new bicycle racks for Cowaramup’s Main Street on Bussell Highway, with six installations expected to be completed in total.
