The City of Parramatta will celebrate the International Day of Non-Violence and the 150th Anniversary of the Birth of Mahatma Gandhi in Jubilee Park, Parramatta on Wednesday 2 October, from 5:30pm-7:30pm.
The International Day of Non-Violence aims to promote a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence by educating the public and raising awareness. The day coincides with the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth, with 2019 marking the 150th anniversary of his birth.
Mahatma Gandhi is remembered for his contributions to India’s development as a free nation and his non-violent approach to protest.
“International Day of Non-Violence is a significant day for communities across the globe. By working together to be a more tolerant and peaceful society, we can make not only our City but the world a nicer place to be,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer said.
“I would like to invite all Parramatta residents and visitors to join us in the celebrations in Jubilee Park.”
The event will commence at 5:30pm with community performances and entertainment. Performance highlights include Darcy Road Public School students, Gayatri Bharat vocalists, Utsav Dance Academy, Swastik Dance Academy and more. Official proceedings will follow, and the evening will conclude at 7:30pm.
Traditional Chai tea and a selection of Indian sweets will be available for purchase.
