Liverpool City Council is again backing Mental Health Month, inviting people to meet and share their stories of mental health and wellbeing.
Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said a gathering and lunch at Liverpool Library called Living Library on 3 October would give people the opportunity to connect with others they may not usually meet.
“October is Mental Health Month, and this year’s theme, “Share the Journey”, reminds us that close connections and good relationships with others helps us enjoy good times in our lives – and help us cope with difficult experiences,” she said.
“Many people report feeling lonely, and believe loneliness is increasing in Australia. For those experiencing or living with mental illness, loneliness can have an even bigger impact, especially when you add social exclusion and stigma.
“Our gathering at Liverpool Library is a chance to share activities and ideas that can have a positive impact on our daily lives and the lives of others.”
South Western Sydney Local Health District Mental Wellbeing Health Promotion Officer, Brendan Bennett, said the event would allow people to share their unique experience and story.
“Instead of borrowing a book, these stories are borrowed and verbally shared with the audience,” he said.
“Two local community members will share their lived experience with mental illness and recovery while a carer will share her insights of being a mother and carer for adult children with mental illness.”
A mental health worker will help bust myths about treatment and how people with mental illness can be supported.
“This event gives the community a chance to learn more about what mental health is and how to access help and support others,” Mr Bennett said.
“Stories help us understand ourselves and help others in the community.”
A short video series about four speakers at previous years’ events will also be launched.
Bookings are essential for the gathering, which includes lunch.
