Western Downs Libraries level-up with new technology

Western Downs Libraries are preparing for an exciting new tech-space next year after receiving close to $30,000 in funding as part of the State Library of Queensland’s Strategic Priorities Grant.

The $29,757 grant will be used to provide a Makerspace for the Dalby Library and two Pop-up Mobile Tech Labs to be shared across other Western Downs Libraries branches.

The Dalby Makerspace will incorporate a comprehensive audio/visual recording studio capable of livestreaming content, a robust 3D modelling lab with 3D printing and scanning capabilities and a multi-use Virtual Reality (VR) Cube for both content creation and consumption.

New technology will allow library visitors to create 3D models of various objects and scan existing items like mobile phones and coffee cups to create accurate digital models in computer programs.

Users will be able to use 3D printed materials for a variety of purposes, such as scale models, digital art and engineering prototypes.

The addition of a VR cube to the library’s technology collection will allow users to hold a physical object in their hands while using VR headsets and facilitate greater learning opportunities.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire says that the upgrades present an exciting opportunity for community members to advance their tech skills.

“These upgrades will put our facilities on a par with those in larger city centres and give our community access to some fantastic new technology to play and learn with which is often not readily available in regional areas,” she said.

“The new Makerspace in Dalby is going to have some amazing new equipment that our school groups will be able to take advantage of for a range of learning activities.

“Individuals will also be able to use Pop-up Tech Labs to explore new ways to create and consume digital content.

“It’s sure to be a hit with both locals and library visitors and we’re really looking forward to seeing what kinds of fantastic designs users can create.”

Upgrades are expected to commence early in 2020.

The makerspace project is proudly funded and supported by the Queensland Government and the State Library of Queensland.
