Elders from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities descended on Blacktown Leisure Centre Stanhope last week to take part in the second Western Sydney Elders Olympics.
This unique and special sporting event saw twelve teams from areas such as Campbelltown, Redfern and even Dubbo, come together for a fantastic afternoon of exercise.
The theme was healthy eating and exercise. Over 100 elders took part in a range of events which encouraged bending, stretching and movement.
The events included tunnel ball, hoop flipping and egg & spoon races.
All events were fully accessible for able bodied and wheelchair participants.
Mayor of Blacktown City Councillor Stephen Bali MP said these Olympics prove that you’re never too old to win an Olympic gold.
“As a sporting city Blacktown is committed to encouraging activity and healthy eating and it is through events such as this that we can encourage healthy practices,” said Mayor Bali.
“The stadium at Blacktown Leisure Centre Stanhope is a first class facility and it is great to see it being used for large community events like the Western Sydney Elders Olympics.”
