Community members are being invited to give feedback on the locations, times, offerings and sustainability practices of mobile food businesses operating on Shire of Augusta Margaret River land. The feedback is being invited as a result of a draft update to the Shire’s Mobile Food Policy, which proposes the inclusion of Pioneer Park Carpark in Cowaramup as an approved trading location on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings within the hours of 4pm to 9pm. Shire of Augusta Margaret River Chief Executive Officer Stephanie Addison-Brown said that while there were a number of locations in Margaret River, Augusta and Prevelly set aside for mobile food business there has never been any space allocated to mobile food business within Cowaramup. “It’s important to find the right areas and set the time slots for food van trade so as to complement existing businesses and enhance the amenity of public areas, as opposed to causing impact,” she said. “Cowaramup Oval was considered by officers as an option, but the sporting ground and hall are already well-activated and parking can get busy when events are on potentially resulting in conflicts-of-use.   “Pioneer Park is being suggested as the preferred option by the Shire as a place with greater capacity for activation. “We now want to hear feedback from the public regarding the Shire’s suggestion in regards to the Cowaramup Mobile Food Van site. “We also want to know your feedback on the inclusion of new sustainability and waste management objectives in the policy, which predominantly aim to reduce landfill.” Objectives include the encouragement of mobile food businesses to:

Use locally sourced or produced goods; Use 100% compostable packaging, cutlery, plates etc. Avoid using single use plastics such as plastic straws, take away containers, cutlery etc.; Provide re-usable crockery, cutlery etc., that can be washed within mobile food vehicle and re-used; and Provide bins for recyclable materials, and organic matter.

“Adhering to these sustainability objectives is not compulsory, but it is one the criteria upon which we assess food van applications, so those that adhere are more likely to be successful or get their site preferences,” Ms Addison-Brown said. The policy is advertised for feedback online.  Submissions can be sent to [email protected] or by post to PO Box 61, Margaret River 6285 until 4pm, Friday 11 October 2019.
