Celebrations recognising the role Victorians aged 60 years and older play in the community will begin next week.

Gannawarra Shire Council is supporting the 37th Victorian Seniors Festival, joining local councils throughout the State in hosting a number of free or low-cost events for its valued citizens throughout October.

“Whether it is an afternoon of music, a cruise along Gunbower Creek or enjoying a day out at Charlton’s Rex Theatre, there is something on offer for everyone within the Gannawarra during the 2019 Victorian Seniors Festival,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth.

The highlight of celebrations occurring throughout the Gannawarra will be the Gannawarra Country Concert. Nikki Nicholls, one of Australia’s top session singers, will celebrate the careers of Carole King and James Taylor during this free performance at the Kerang Memorial Hall on Wednesday, 9 October.

Other major events Council is hosting include a bus trip to Charlton’s Rex Theatre for the screening of 2019 movie Poms on Wednesday, 16 October, a free makeup workshop at the Sir John Gorton Library, Kerang on Tuesday, 29 October and a Wetlander River Cruise on Thursday, 31 October.

The Gannawarra Library Service is also taking part in the celebrations, with Grandparents Story Time sessions planned for its Cohuna branch on Thursday, 10 October and the Sir John Gorton Library, Kerang on Thursday, 24 October.

“The theme of this year’s Victorian Seniors Festival is Get into It!, and I encourage all seniors in the Gannawarra to do that throughout October,” Mayor Learmonth said.

Details of all events are listed in Council’s Victorian Seniors Festival Guide, which features other community events occurring throughout October including Council’s popular Social Meals program.

Copies of the Victorian Seniors Festival Guide are available from Council’s Customer Service Centres at Cohuna and Kerang, Gannawarra Library Service branches and on Council's website.
