Calling all war veterans from Gisborne and surrounds

Published on 25 September 2019

Are you or someone you know a war veteran who left for their service from either Gisborne, Riddells Creek, Macedon or Mt Macedon?

You may have served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, East Timor or Afghanistan. If so, Council wants to hear from you.

Council and the Gisborne and Macedon Ranges Returned Service League is working on a project to install additional plaques at the war memorial site in Hamilton Street Gisborne. The new plaques will list the names of all service people who left from Gisborne and the surrounding district to serve in all conflicts since World War I.

Currently the cenotaph only lists World War I veterans. It has been a long-held goal of the RSL to add the names of all other veterans to the site to complete the picture of military service people from the area.

The RSL has been researching the names to be placed on the plaques, however confirming the names of service people for conflicts post-World War I can be difficult. The community is being asked to assist in identifying names which should be on the new plaques.

The additional plaques will be added to new granite plinths and will be in place for Remembrance Day services on 11 November 2019.

Anyone wishing to confirm names on the list of veterans should contact Council by Monday 7 October by either:

When providing information, you will be required to provide your contact details as well as name/s of the veteran/s and the conflict where the service was completed. This will allow Council to verify the details and confirm the addition of the name with you.

This project has been made possible by a grant from the Victorian Government, Department of Premier and Cabinet – Veteran Services.
