Back burning and aerial water bombing continued successfully today as emergency services worked to strengthen the containment lines of a fire that is continuing to burn 2km south of Amity Point at North Stradbroke Island (Minjerrribah).
There is no threat to people or property and the fire is well within the containment lines.
There is no active fire front to the south and the wind direction is currently pushing the northern section of the fire west, towards a back burned area.
Smoke may be increased in the Dunwich area for several hours and residents and visitors are advised to close windows and doors and to keep respiratory medications close at hand if they are required.
The evacuation centre at Dunwich is not expecting people to stay overnight and is not operational, but remains resourced and available for emergencies if required.
Despite the fire, Straddie – the world’s second largest sand island – is still open for school holidays.
Around 700 hectares of swamp and bushland has burned in the fire that began in inaccessible swampland on Tuesday after dry lightning struck the island.
East Coast Road remains open but motorists are advised to watch for slow moving emergency services vehicles that are being used in monitoring the fire edge.

Aerial bombing set to continue at Amity Point fire – update at 10.40am Saturday 21 September 2019Aerial water bombing is planned again today to fight the bushfire that continues to burn 2km south of Amity Point on North Stradbroke Island.
There is no threat to people or property.
The evacuation centre run by Redland City Council at the Dunwich Community Hall remains open. A total of 10 residents stayed at the centre overnight as a precaution.
East Coast Road is open but visitors and residents should be aware of fire appliances working along the roadside.
Backburning last night further strengthened containment lines.
Despite the fire, Straddie is well and truly open for school holidays.

Community Champions acknowledged for their work during Redlands bushfires – update as at 10.30am Friday 20 September 2019The bushfire on North Stradbroke Island continues to burn within containment lines in inaccessible swampland south of Amity Point and west of East Coast Road.
Southern Moreton Bay Island Community Champions, who were last night acknowledged at the Resilient Australia Awards 2019 with Redland City Council’s Community Champions Program winning the Queensland Local Government Award, have been in the evacuation centre supporting the North Stradbroke Island fire response efforts.
There is currently no reported threat to life or property.
North Stradbroke Island is open for business and visitors planning to head to beautiful Straddie for the school holidays should not cancel their plans.
Successful backburning was undertaken overnight.
A total of 25 residents stayed overnight at the evacuation centre at Dunwich Community Hall as a precaution, with 10 people currently at the centre. The evacuation centre, run by Redland City Council with assistance from SMBI Community Champions, will remain open.
There is no impact on camp sites and the island remains open for visitors for the school holidays with holidaymakers advised there is no need to cancel their plans.
East Coast Road remains open and there may be intermittent traffic controls through the day.
Council is encouraging motorists to be patient on the road and follow the instructions of traffic controllers.

A significant multi-agency response continues with firefighters from QFES, Redland City Council, National Parks and Wildlife, traditional owners Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation, Sibelco, and Department of Natural Resources and Mines on the ground.

The eastern side of the fire has been contained, however there is still intermittent traffic control on East Coast Road which may cause delays. Please be patient on the road and follow the instructions of traffic controllers.

Update as at 11.10am; Thursday, 19 September 2019Don’t cancel your plans to visit Straddie
Visitors with plans to head to wonderful Straddie for the school holidays should not cancel their travel plans.
The fire remains within containment lines in inaccessible swampland 3km south of Amity Point.
It is not affecting camp sites, however be aware there is some smoke on the island.
Whales can be seen daily from the Point Lookout Gorge Walk and the beaches are crystal clear, including Cylinder Beach which for the last two years has been named Surf Lifesaving Queensland’s Best Beach in the the State.
There’s great fishing and snorkelling.
You can also be sure to see dolphins at Point Lookout and very often around the jetty at Amity.
You will also be able to see kangaroos and koalas across the island.
There’s also great local produce with the Point Lookout Markets every Sunday on the holidays (22 and 29 September and 6 October).

Update as at 9.10am; Thursday, 19 September 2019Five people spent the night at the evacuation centre at Dunwich Community Hall overnight as a bushfire continues to burn 3km south of Amity Point in inaccessible swampland on North Stradbroke Island.
Those in the evacuation centre self evacuated. The evacuation centre, run by Redland City Council, will remain open today.
There is currently no reported threat to life or property.
The fire is currently moving slowly in a westerly direction towards the western side of the island.
Suppressant gel dropped late yesterday afternoon from a large aerial tanker, a Boeing 737 brought in from New South Wales, has assisted the fire fighting efforts particularly on the southern end of the fire.
Waterbombing will continue today. Backburning may occur later in the day.
The eastern side of the fire, which runs parallel to East Coast Road, has been controlled, reducing the risk of future closures of the road.
Firefighting efforts will focus on the northern side of the fire today.

The Redlands Local Disaster Management Group has been stood up as a fire continues to burn in swamp land approximately three kilometres south of Amity Point on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah).
The fire began last night in an area of inaccessible swamp after dry lightning strikes hit the island.
It is now moving both north towards Amity Point and south towards Speedies Lane and is still burning within containment lines.
There are currently no reports of threat to life or property on the island.
Ground crews from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC), National Parks and Wildlife and Redland City Council are supported by fixed and rotary wing water bombing aircraft plus an aerial observer that is mapping the fire.
A large aerial tanker has also dropped a load of fire suppression gel on the southern end of the fire this afternoon.
A QFES Incident Management Team has been established at Dunwich; and Queensland Police and SES crews are also on the island.
Eight people who were evacuated to Dunwich Community Hall overnight have returned to family, but the evacuation centre currently remains open as a precaution.

Eight people were evacuated from their homes south of Amity Point at Seven Mile, North Stradbroke Island last night due to a bushfire burning in inaccessible swamp.
The residents were evacuated to the Dunwich Community Hall where they stayed overnight, however have now moved to stay with family and friends.
There is no current threat to life or infrastructure on the island.
The fire began last night after dry lightning strikes hit the island. It currently has a 100m front and is burning within containment lines, west of the old Peat Mine Track, approximately 2km south of Amity Point.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews, supported by Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC) fire crews, National Parks and Wildlife crews and Redland City Council’s Fire Management Team, are fighting the fire.
