Residents in the Armidale region are being invited to share how they are saving water and how they think households can conserve water in the future, with a community survey launched today.

The survey seeks to show how many households had implemented water-efficient products and other water-saving activities and identify the most effective measures to conserve the region’s town water supplies in the future, Armidale Regional Council Mayor Simon Murray said.

“As dam levels continue to fall and we move closer to Day Zero, feedback from the short survey will give us a clear picture of where to focus our efforts to maximise water savings,” Councillor Murray said.

“Our community has rallied together fantastically to curb consumption. However, more needs to be done to achieve our target of 160 litres per person per day and further preserve our remaining supplies.

“Reaching that target would extend our supplies by a couple of months. Otherwise, we have about 420 days before we run out of town water, based on current consumption levels.”

Complete the survey

From Tuesday 1 October, all residents and businesses on town water supplies in the Armidale region will be on Level 5 water restrictions.

Guyra has been on Level 5 restrictions since June and the decision to escalate Armidale to Level 5 has been made because of the Bureau of Meteorology’s latest forecast for continued below average rainfall and above average temperatures.

In the countdown to Day Zero, the Level 5 restrictions will include three trigger points with reduced per person daily water consumption targets.

“We will have a much greater chance of achieving those goals if we understand what households have done so far, how they are feeling about the restrictions and issues that might stop them from taking further action,” he said.

“The survey should take 10 minutes or so to complete but the feedback will be invaluable in guiding our ongoing water saving campaign.

“Every litre we save today is a litre we have available tomorrow.”
