The University of Wollongong has revealed long-term plans for an expanded South West Sydney campus in Liverpool CBD, cementing Liverpool as the tertiary education capital of Sydney’s South West.
Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller was thrilled to see the university reaffirm its goal to accommodate 7000 students in Liverpool by 2030.
“This is a great vote of confidence in Liverpool,” Mayor Waller said.
“The University of Wollongong opened its doors in Liverpool in 2017. We were thrilled that such a highly regarded institution had chosen Liverpool.
“Two years on, our streets are more vibrant thanks to the volume of students that now walk them and our young people have more opportunities to study close to home, not to mention the beautiful mural depicting UOW student Adi Holmes that graces our skyline”.
“The news that the university is looking to further cement its presence in South West Sydney is a great vote of confidence in Liverpool as a quality tertiary education destination.”
UOW has called for expressions of interest for interested parties to create a new campus in the Liverpool CBD and is interested in proposals for a mixed use development with complementary uses.
UOW Chief Finance Officer Damien Israel said UOW has been very pleased with the response to its start-up South Western Sydney Campus in Moore Street.
“Within three years we have grown to around 1000 students and now we are setting our sights on delivering a purpose-built permanent campus to accommodate 7000 students by 2030,” Mr Israel said.
“The University is very grateful for the warm welcome we have received in Liverpool and for the support we have received from Liverpool City Council.”
Mayor Waller said it was wonderful that University of Wollongong see themselves as part Council’s vision for the future of the city.
“This comes as Liverpool is maturing into Sydney’s third CBD,” Mayor Waller said.
“We have more than a billion dollars’ worth of development in the pipeline for the city centre.”
“Council is also working to make Liverpool a wonderful place to live, work and study by improving its streetscapes, connecting it to the Georges River and open space.”
