Leeuwin sets sail for 30-year anniversary

Since 1989 the Shire of Harvey has subsidised students between the ages of 14 and 25 to participate in the Leeuwin Sail Training Program.
The Leeuwin Youth Explorer Voyage is a week-long expedition for people aged 14-25 who have a sense of adventure and who want to learn and forge lifelong friendships.
On Monday, October 7 the first voyage will take place and the captain will head out of Fremantle harbour with the budding sailors on board.
The participants’ family and friends can track the ship’s position and follow their journey.
The Leeuwin is a working ship, so during the voyage everyone participants in many activities, including:
Setting and furling the sails; Climbing the masts and working aloft; Standing watch while sailing through the night; and Weather conditions, watch roster and ship positioning affects the schedule so there is never a dull moment.On the last full day of the voyage, the participants nominate a relief ship’s crew from within their teams considering who has shown leadership, team management skills and capability.
The program is also sponsored by the Lions Clubs of Harvey, Brunswick Junction and Australind and the Rotary Club of Harvey. This support from the Shire and the service clubs allows young people who live in the Shire to apply to go on a subsidised voyage on the Leeuwin.
