Green waste bins to be collected weekly until new year

Kerbside collection customers in Corangamite Shire will have their green waste collected weekly until the new year.

The fortnightly collection of green-lid FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) bins has doubled as gardens enter their peak growing season.

Waste and Sustainability Officer Jess Maxwell said the extra pickups began this week and would continue until Friday 3 January.

“This is the fifth year Council has provided a weekly service to meet the seasonal demand,” Ms Maxwell said.

“It’s an excellent time of year to get out in the garden and really get our neighbourhoods looking fantastic as plants have a growth spurt after hibernating through winter.”

Ms Maxwell said the extra pick-ups would help residents get their properties ready for the upcoming fire season by reducing fuel around their homes.

“The increased growth now will dry out in summer so these extra collections are a great opportunity to get rid of overgrowth that could pose a risk to your home or your neighbours if there is a bushfire,” she said.

“More than just lawn and garden clippings waste can go in your FOGO bin. All food scraps including meat, bones, citrus and dairy can go in the green bin—even pet waste and vacuum dust.”

Greenwaste that is collected is composted at the Naroghid Landfill and used in rehabilitation works at the site.

Keeping green waste out of landfill saves on waste management costs and reduces greenhouse emissions.
