York Trails Unveiled

 History, Nature and Art lovers will welcome the newest information about trail hotspots in the neighbourhood, with the Shire of York unveiling three new trail brochures to coincide with peak season visitation. The trails explore York’s art & cultural interests, rich flora and fauna, as well as York’s proud history as a heritage town.

York Walks offers three short self-guided walk options varying from .7km to 3.5km. Titled Grand Designs, Hidden Gems and Convicts and Crossings, the walks offer a unique experience that takes in York’s pubs, parapets, convict history and hidden side streets. For the intrepid you can cross the river by York’s famous suspension bridge or dabble your toes in the water of the ancient ford river crossing. 

The WARA Art trail leads you through six unique woven sculptures made by a Japanese technique (WARA) using locally grown wheat straw. The six much-larger-than-life sculptures were created by Japanese and Australian artists to represent some of Australia’s endangered fauna, including the Rakali Rat that can be found on the banks of the Avon River.  The WARA Art Walk Trail brochure provides detailed information on each endangered species created through the WARA Art Program.

York Cycles offers bicyclists circular loop rides along the Avon River, back roads and for the more adventurists uphill rides with amazing views. Aimed at leisure riders the cycle routes explore York through a mixture of footpath and road routes, encompassing York’s famous suspension bridge, soon to be developed Avon Park Precinct and Ballardong Noongar culture and interest points.

Shire President, Cr David Wallace said the release of the new trails brochures supports York’s position as a trail friendly destination and the Shire’s intention to provide educational and immersive experiences for all ages and abilities. “Our aim is to provide high quality amenities that will encourage residents and visitors to come together and interact,” said Cr Wallace.

The release of these new trails supports the existing nature walks and self-drive trail information available from York Visitor Centre or on the Visitor Centres website visit.york.wa.gov.au
