Council calls for residents and trolley owners to keep Wyndham beautiful

As the winner of the Keep Victoria Beautiful Sustainable City Awards, Wyndham City Council is calling on the community and trolley owners to take responsibility for their trolleys to keep Wyndham clean.

Environment and Sustainability portfolio holder Cr Heather Marcus said trolleys outside of shopping centre complexes were considered litter, unsightly, a hazard to road users, and had a negative impact on the look and feel of the City.

“During the past 12 months, 115 residents reported abandoned trolleys to Council, with 200 trolleys collected by Council,” Cr Marcus said.

“Abandoned trolleys are a major issue in our parks and reserves.”

“They are an eyesore and can be dangerous to the community when placed on footpaths or roads.” 

“Those dumped in creeks and rivers may cause a build up of debris and contamination.”

“We need everyone to step up and do their part for the environment, so I ask shoppers to do the right thing and bring their trolleys back to their local supermarkets after they offload their groceries.”  

“Many supermarkets have outsourced the management of their shopping trolleys and these contractors need to actively patrol Wyndham streets to ensure the trolleys are returned within the owner’s site.”

“Shopping trolley owners remain responsible for their trolleys, even if they have hired someone to manage their trolleys.”

“Council is asking trolley owners to renew their trolley management plans with Council to encourage compliance with the local laws and avoid enforcement action.” 

“Ultimately, supermarkets need to take responsibility for collecting their trolleys and take responsibility for ensuring their trolleys do not detract from the presentation of our City.”

“We encourage the retailers to be proactive and roll out new trolley technology, including a greater use of wheel locks and coin operated trolleys, together with a trolley tagging systems.”
