Have your say on City of Parramatta’s draft plans for housing and land use

City of Parramatta Council invites the local community to have their say on three draft strategies that will shape the City’s growth and development over the next 20 years and address the Greater Sydney Commission’s aspirations for the Central River City.

Council is exhibiting drafts of its Local Housing Strategy, Local Strategic Planning Statement, and Community Infrastructure Strategy, until Monday 11 November 2019 for feedback.

“The City of Parramatta is undergoing an extraordinary transformation. Thanks to numerous major urban renewal projects currently underway, our City is set to become Greater Sydney’s central hub of services, infrastructure and jobs,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer said.

“To meet the needs of our growing population, we must make sure we’re investing in the right strategies today. Council encourages all members of the community to have their say on the draft Local Strategic Planning Statement, Local Housing Strategy and Community Infrastructure Plan, which represent our City’s roadmap for the next 20 years.”

The draft Local Strategic Planning Statement sets out Council’s 20-year land use planning vision, balancing the City’s need for economic, transport and housing development, with the protection and enhancement of environmental amenity, local character, open space, and heritage.

The draft statement outlines 16 planning priorities centred on four themes - local planning, liveability, productivity and sustainability - and the actions needed to achieve them. The priorities include: strengthening access to public transport; improving the quality of waterways; increasing commercial space in key areas; and expanding Parramatta’s role as Sydney’s Central City.

City of Parramatta’s population is set to double from 235,000 residents in 2016 to 470,000 in 2036. Council’s draft Local Housing Strategy provides a 20-year blueprint for the delivery of housing that keeps pace with this rapid growth.

Key objectives include: providing housing in high-growth areas, supported by the necessary infrastructure and services; delivering a greater range of housing types; increasing the availability of affordable housing apartments; protecting the local character of our low-density neighbourhoods; and supporting the City’s thriving economy.

The draft Community Infrastructure Strategy outlines Council’s long-term vision for the provision of community infrastructure, including libraries, affordable rental housing, community spaces, recreation spaces, buildings, programs and services in the City.

Identifying key opportunities and directions for the City of Parramatta’s 12 high-growth areas, the strategy will inform Council’s planning, funding and delivery of community infrastructure.
