The City of Wanneroo has been recognised as a finalist in Economic Development Australia’s (EDA) 2019 National Economic Development Awards for Excellence.

EDA is the national peak body for economic development professionals; building capacity, promoting excellence and providing leadership on issues that matter to our members.

EDA’s prestigious national awards program recognises Australia’s best economic development programs and partnerships, marketing campaigns, and the year's most influential leaders.

The ‘Discover Wanneroo mobile app’ project is a finalist in the Digital Entrepreneurs category with the winner announced at the gala award dinner which will be held during the National Economic Development Conference on 24 October 2019 at the stunning Adelaide Zoo.

All finalists and winners will also be featured in a special edition of the EDA Journal.

The Discover Wanneroo mobile app was developed to activate existing trails and points of interest in the City by delivering interactive content including augmented reality, to a wide target market, providing an opportunity to educate and enhance the tourism experience.

The app provides engagement with the environment in a fun and informative way with location specific audio, video, quizzes, ‘selfie’ frames, word searches and more.

The National Economic Development Awards for Excellence includes12 categories which honour organisations and individuals for their efforts in driving economic growth, facilitating powerful partnerships, implementing innovative solutions to challenges and improving local communities.

“We had a record number of entries this year so to be named a finalist amongst such fierce competition is a considerable achievement,” said Jacqueline Brinkman, EDA Chief Executive Officer.

“The National Economic Development Awards for Excellence are a wonderful opportunity to recognise those teams and individuals around Australia implementing innovative tactics to drive economic prosperity within their communities,” said Ms Brinkman.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said being selected as a finalist in the awards is a wonderful recognition for the City.

“This is acknowledgment of the excellent work of the City’s Advocacy and Economic Development team who had the vision to develop an app that greatly enhances visitor experience and provides an opportunity to increase people’s fitness and general well-being,” Mayor Roberts said.

“The project was developed in collaboration with the WA Shipwreck Museum, multi-media students at North Metropolitan TAFE and talented young local photographers.

“The mobile app attracts visitors through a unique experience that educates them about conservation while showcasing the City’s heritage and tourism assets and also provides a flow on economic effect,” she said.

The Discover Wanneroo app is available to download free via app stores.
