New Recreation Strategy to create more active and healthy community

Published on 07 October 2019

Council is calling for residents’ ideas and views to help in the development our new Recreation Strategy.

The strategy will define Council’s role in facilitating recreation activities in our region, ensuring as many people as possible can enjoy the health and well-being benefits they bring.

Councillor for Recreation and Sport Glenn Milne said this was a valuable chance for residents to help create more opportunities for the community to stay active.

“We know that staying active is one of the keys to physical and mental well-being, and our recreation facilities and activities provide a raft of opportunities for our community to do this,” Cr Milne said.

“By collecting the community’s views and incorporating them into our new Recreation Strategy it’s our hope that even more people in our community, regardless of gender, cultural background, age or ability will be able to become more active.”

Topics that could be considered include:

What do you think are the key issues relating to Council-managed recreation facilities in our region that need to be addressed? What would encourage residents to be more physically and socially active? What should Council’s role be in relation to the development of recreation facilities in our region? How can Council support all sports (regardless of size, location and income streams) to develop suitable facilities? How can Council help provide more opportunities for people to participate regardless of gender, identity, ability, cultural background or other factors?Residents can provide their feedback in several ways: visit www.mildura.vic.gov.au/HaveYourSay and either follow the links to the online survey or provide a comment send us your response to the above questions in writing by emailing Recreation Officer Sue O’Brien at sue.o’[email protected] or posting your written comments to:

In coming weeks there will also be an opportunity for residents to take part in a workshop to further explore opportunities and hear the community’s ideas. The workshop will be widely advertised once dates and times have been confirmed.

Once Council has collated feedback from residents and groups, a Draft Recreation Strategy will be produced and advertised for public comment.
