Western Downs youth to ‘carve up’ skate parks

Youngsters have the chance to kickflip alongside some of the country’s best skaters as part of this year’s Skate Park Tour event series taking over the Western Downs.

The free tour will ‘drop in’ to Dalby, Miles, and Tara over the next three weekends, with a range of fun activities on offer including skateboarding and filmmaking workshops, laser skirmish, face painting, and a live DJ.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Kaye Maguire said the Skate Park Tour series allowed kids to head outdoors and have some fun while showing off their moves at their own local facility.

“Young skating and scootering enthusiasts can refine their skills as part of a skating workshop and learn how to capture all the action with Extreme Filmmaking workshops also on offer,” Cr Maguire said.

“The Tour will take over three of the region’s skate parks across October, with the first event rolling into Tara on Saturday, 12 October from 10am to 12pm.”

The tour will then progress to Dalby and Miles over the following two weekends.

Australian Skateboarding Community Initiative Managing Director Donny Frazer said the workshops were about bringing kids together to have some fun in the local community.

“One of the biggest benefits for local park users is being able to learn new ways to skate at their local park, and also connect with other skatepark communities,” Mr Frazer said.

There’ll also be plenty happening away from the skate bowl, with face painting, giveaways and live music on offer, and food and drink available for purchase.

Limited places are available for the skateboarding, scooter and filmmaking workshops and residents are encouraged to visit the events section of Council’s website or phone 1300 COUNCIL to secure a spot.
