Bernard Fitzsimmons – WDRC Cadet
Bernard Fitzsimmons thought his dream to become a qualified Engineer might never come true, until he was given the opportunity to join Western Down Regional Council’s cadetship program.
Bernard started his cadetship with Council in 2017 and is now over halfway through his University degree.
“I started studying a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours) a few years ago but had put my studies on-hold,” he said.
Then I saw the cadetship application advertised and realised it was a great opportunity to continue studying my degree while gaining workplace experience at the same time.
“The last two years have been an amazing opportunity to work in a supportive environment with experienced engineers who can provide support and guidance in my role.
“As I pass my subjects each semester, Council reimburses my University fees as well as other expenses such as textbooks.”
Council’s Spokesperson for Finance and Corporate Services, Ian Rasmussen, believes that a Cadetship with Council is the perfect way to earn while you learn.
“Cadetships allow the opportunity to work full-time at Council while studying part-time for your university degree,” Cr Rasmussen said.
“Our cadets gain valuable industry experience which really helps reinforce what they are learning at University.
“Once they have finished their degree, there are opportunities to continue as a permanent staff member at Council.”
Applications are now open for three cadetship positions for 2020 – one in civil design and two as technical officers.
Anyone who is considering commencing their studies next year or is currently studying a related degree can apply, with applications closing on 24 October.
