Bay businesses join borrow cup bandwagon

Businesses in the shire’s north are following the lead of their southern counterparts, with five beverage sellers around Batemans Bay joining the borrow cup initiative.

Eurobodalla Council is providing businesses with reusable cups to ‘loan’ to their customers, reducing the need for single-use plastic cups. Council’s road safety officer Kate McDougall said the borrow cups were dual purpose.

“The reusable cups reduce landfill and waterway pollution. Made from a 50/50 blend of rice-husk fibre and food-grade polypropylene they cups are branded with the road safety message: don’t trust your tired self,” Ms McDougall said.

“It’s a message that helps combat driver fatigue – one of the three big killers on NSW roads.”

Chews on Hughes, Crumb, JJs at the Marina, The Tribe and The Venetian now offer borrow cups. Ms McDougall said she was keen to see more outlets to join the scheme.

“It’s a win for businesses, travellers and the planet. Council is proud to offer support and we’ve plenty more cups on offer,” she said.

The borrow cup initiative was instigated by Narooma’s Charms Baltis who was looking for ways to eliminate single-use coffee cups from the town. Ms Baltis said the three billion single-use coffee cups used by Australians each year ended up in landfill or waterways.

“The borrow cups are another way to bring sustainable use to a new audience.”

In the south of the shire Bound to Earth, Narooma Ice Creamery Café, The View, Montague Coffee, Casey’s Café, Raven Café and Grill, Blue Earth, and the Surf Club Café all offer borrow cups to patrons. In central Eurobodalla the Mossy Café offers borrow cups.
