The combined vision to create a strategic and coordinated approach to growing existing events and attracting new events within Livingstone has become a reality with the official launch of the Capricorn Coast Region Event Attraction Strategy 2025 today.
Mayor Bill Ludwig said this framework document will guide the identification, planning, sponsorship criteria, implementation targets and overall strategic drivers across the region relating to events, in order to increase overnight visitor expenditure, create jobs, and grow the economic benefit for the region.
“The Capricorn Coast region is fast-becoming renowned for its iconic events that celebrate the region’s culture, lifestyle, and natural appeal, creating a buzz within the greater Central Queensland region, but also on a national and international scale,” Mayor Ludwig said.
“This is an exciting opportunity for our region to harness the creativity and innovation of all stakeholders involved to position our region in building on its arts, culture, live entertainment, and sports tourism events over the next five years.
“Council would like to sincerely thank all of the stakeholders involved in bringing this document to fruition and the Australian Government for its funding support through the Building Better Regions.”
Deputy Mayor Nigel Hutton said tourism is the region’s largest employer, injecting $151 million into the local economy, with Tourism contributing to 10 per cent the economy, higher than the Queensland average of 6 per cent.
“Over 80 events are staged on the Capricorn Coast annually, with major events attracting 125,285 event enthusiasts, contributing an economic impact of $7.9 million annually into the Livingstone Shire,” Cr Hutton said.
“With its stunning coastline, unique coastal villages and backdrop of the Keppel Group on the shores of the Southern Great Barrier Reef, the Capricorn Coast has a distinct competitive advantage in the areas of coastal lifestyle, wellness, arts, environmental sustainability and water related sports.
“The development of the Capricorn Coast Region Events Strategy 2025 provides an opportunity for Council to create the right conditions and physical environment for event organisers to hold events in the region and succeed in line with the needs and expectations of the community.
“Through greater synergies between events and the tourism industry and the wider Capricorn and State event and tourism strategies, the outcome is to create a stronger return on investment for the community and industry on the Capricorn Coast.”
