There is gold at the end of the rainbow if you are leaving on a jet plane from Whitsunday Regional Council’s owned and operated Whitsunday Coast Airport (WCA).
For the second year running WCA won Gold in the Specialised Tourism category at the Whitsunday Tourism ‘night-of-nights’ at Daydream island on Saturday.
Whitsunday Coast Airport recently completed a $15 million terminal upgrade to complement the $25 million runway upgrade in late 2017.
Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Andrew Willcox said the awards were a great opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of our amazing tourism stakeholders.
“I applaud their dedication to the tourism industry to ensure the Whitsundays continues to be voted the most popular tourism destination nationally and internationally,” he said.
“Whitsunday Coast Airport is one of the fastest growing regional airports in Australia and these upgrades will ensure visitors to our region enjoy a positive experience when transiting.
“The feedback on our unique Heart of the Great Barrier Reef aquarium and the Virtual Reality screen in the baggage area has been exceptional and helped raise the profile of our region,” Mayor Willcox said.
“Our airport continues to expand thanks to amazing support from the Palaszczuk government, Tourism Whitsundays, Tourism Events Queensland and our airline partners.”
Whitsunday Coast Airport general manager Brian Joiner said the WCA was the only mainland airport between Townsville and Brisbane that boasted direct flights to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
“The award is great recognition for our small but hard-working airport team who are also exploring options with airlines for commencement of a Whitsundays-Cairns direct flight,” he said.
