Share your support for an expanded Point Lonsdale Lighthouse Reserve heritage listing

We all appreciate the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse Reserve and its rich maritime history. But now, we need to protect it.

The Borough of Queenscliffe is lending its full support to a Heritage Victoria recommendation that expands the heritage listing of the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse to include all surrounding buildings, objects and land that is integral to its history.

The lighthouse itself has been heritage listed since 1982, but only recently has the Heritage Act 2017 allowed objects integral to a registered place to be included as part of a heritage listing.

The recommendation to Heritage Council Victoria puts forward the inclusion of such historical artefacts as the 1890s-era rocket shed, the collection of wartime emplacements, the foghorn shed, P1 huts and Buckley’s Cave, to name but a few. The recommendation also aligns with the upgrades and maintenance work currently planned for the Reserve.

We encourage all residents to demonstrate their support for the amended heritage listing by making a submission to the Heritage Council, and ticking the ‘Supports the Executive Director’s recommendation’ box in point no. 4.
