Sydney surprises for non-English speaking riders
City of Sydney 24 Oct 2019

Language is proving to be no barrier as the Sydney Rides season of cycling events continues to bring surprises to its non-English speaking audiences.

When Kingsford residents Mr and Mrs Chao signed up for a free bike maintenance course as part this year's Sydney Rides program, they didn't know what to expect.

The couple arrived with limited English, an open mind and an interest in bike mechanics. As a result of the course, they now have a wealth of hands-on knowledge to use and pass on.

"To be honest, I didn't expect the course to be incredibly interesting. I was supposed to be my husband's interpreter, but in the end I didn't even have time to interpret for him, as our instructor just went on and on without wasting a minute," Mrs Chiu said.

"My husband also found the course to be very useful. He loves hands-on experience and is eager to learn new things. Since the workshop, he has picked up a good technique for changing bike tires on the go.

"I'm not a bike rider, but my husband is, and we both think Sydney Rides offers something for everyone to enjoy."

Sydney Rides runs from 1 September to 30 November. The season-long celebration of the increasing numbers of people bike riding in Sydney offers dozens of free and low-cost family and community events across the city.

Upcoming events include:

Until 31 October Sydney Rides photo exhibition in Paddington Reservoir Gardens 9 November The Big Adventure - Sydney's biggest pop-up adventure playground in Sydney Park 23 November Cycle speed dating Weekly City of Sydney cycling confidence and bike maintenance courses
