Bin inspections kick off from next Monday 4 November with the organic waste bin (green bin) up first.
The Which Bin? Competition is a new initiative of Council to encourage local residents to correctly dispose of recycling and organic waste using Council’s 3 bin system.
“Green bin waste is important to get right, placing the correct organic waste in this bin is a small task households can do which will make a major difference to the sustainability of our environment,” explained Council’s Waste Manager Tahra Sayers.
“There are so many household waste items like food and garden scraps placed in our red lid bins which find their way to landfill. These waste items can be disposed of in our green lid bins to be reproduced into nutrient rich compost that can be used in gardens to increases resistance to drought and dry conditions, improving water retention and reducing soil erosion.
“Even worse is placing waste in the incorrect kerbside bin as this can result in a whole truckload of contaminated waste going to landfill, wasting our efforts to recycle or re-direct green waste to organic collection.
“This competition is a great opportunity for parents to teach their children that all waste goes somewhere and to encourage a lifelong lesson in looking after our environment.”
Next week, put your green bin out for the kerbside collection on your usual collection day. Registered addresses will be randomly selected for inspection by Cleanaway staff. If your address is selected and no contamination is detected on inspection, you will be our weekly Waste Warrior and winner of a $250 Love Local Moree card!
Make sure you have checked the MPSC Waste app to see what can be disposed of in the organic waste bin, some items include:
Bones: from leftover food Branches and leaves Coffee grindings Fruit scraps Garden waste Grass clippings Kitchen toweling Kitty litter Leaves Manure/animal droppings Meat scraps Tea bags Plant cuttings Vacuum cleaner dust Tissues Vegetable scraps WeedsNext week’s winner will be announced on Friday 8 November in the afternoon via Council’s Facebook page.

Acting General Manager Mitchell Johnson urges all residents to be diligent in checking what can be disposed of in the green waste bin in preparation for next week’s inspections.
“Contamination can be found by Cleanaway representatives on inspection through checking residents’ bins prior to emptying and by the camera located in the garbage trucks hopper.
“The competition is a great way to reduce contamination of recycled waste and keep our shire green.”
