Mareeba will soon have a new library, training venue and undercover bowls facility with works officially beginning on the new Cedric Davies Community Hub.
The project is made possible through almost $1.1 million from the $58.5 million 2019-21 Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program (LGGSP).
In turning the first sod, Minister for Local Government Stirling Hinchliffe said the benefits of the Community Hub would be felt well into the future.
“When it is completed, this will be a state-of-the-art facility housing community and training activities and events, outreach community services, a new library and undercover lawn bowls,” Mr Hinchliffe said.
“On top of that, the council estimates that 44 jobs will be created or supported by these works, which is a fantastic result for the local economy and for Mareeba families.
“Which is why the Queensland Government is proud to support this project through almost $1.1 million from the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program.
“I am particularly pleased that it is being named after former Mareeba Shire Chairman and councillor, the late Cedric Davies, and it is wonderful that his wife June and family are here today to share in this moment.”
Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the community hub would have a positive impact on the region.
“This will be a place of gathering, of community connection and inclusion, and it will enhance liveability in an already beautiful place to live,” she said.
“The Mareeba Shire Council must be congratulated for recognising the need for this facility and for securing the funding to be able to deliver it for the community.”
Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore thanked the Palaszczuk Government for the funding to move the project forward.
“The community has been deprived of adequate library services for many years and we are simply delighted to see this new community facility get underway,” Mayor Gilmore said.
“As a small rural council, we rely heavily on grants and subsidies to maintain and upgrade community facilities.
“We are so indebted to the Queensland Government for the funding to make this all possible.”
The LGGSP is designed to support councils to meet the needs of their community by providing funding for the delivery of priority capital infrastructure projects.
