Seeking Expressions of Interest from WA artists to participate in Perth Festival 2020’s closing event, Highway to Hell
About the event:
Highway to Hell will take place on 1 March 2020 and is expected to engage 100,000 people from across the metropolitan area. The project presents a once in a generation opportunity for the people of Perth to ‘reclaim’ Canning Highway for a day. It will be the major cultural activity in WA on the Labour Day long weekend and a memorable celebration to close the Perth Festival.
Highway to Hell takes inspiration from the AC/DC song of the same name and Bon Scott’s connection to the area. For years, Bon walked the highway from the Leopold Hotel in Palmyra to Fremantle, and AC/DC lit up the Raffles Hotel with legendary gigs. Now we’re closing the highway, all 10km’s of it, for one special day designed for families and fans alike. We will be acknowledging, and subverting the Bon Scott masculinity myth, whilst paying homage to a shared collective consciousness of rock!
The Highway to Hell experience includes a highway long picnic, multiple static stages and performance areas, the world’s largest AC/DC karaoke, roving choirs, after-parties and a connected program of talks, exhibitions and site-specific activations. Central to the celebration is a performance featuring 8 flatbed prime-mover trucks carrying musicians from home, interstate and abroad, who perform a curated program of AC/DC songs as the trucks travel along the highway and stop at each performance zones. We will showcase an eclectic rage of musical collaborations, from Australian rock, to Japanese punk to Finnish folk and beyond.
About this opportunity:
Each Highway to Hell truck offers an opportunity for creative ‘set dressing’ that will transform Highway to Hell into a rolling visual feast.
We are looking for artists who think they have a great idea for ‘dressing’ one of our 8 prime movers.
Highway to Hell pays homage to the notion that from the ordinary comes greatness. We are looking for concepts that celebrate or subvert the ‘Australian Dream’ and all of its strange expressions. We’re thinking milk-carton regattas and ‘bird man’ competitions, garage gigs, street parties, Countdown or Recovery, the corner deli, community garden, sporting club or home theatre – or, whatever it means to you and your community.
Each artist or artist group selected for participation will receive $3,500 in total to develop and realise their designs. This fee should cover all labour and materials.
