The installation of smart LED street lighting, free public WiFi, bin sensors and interactive digital place making features have recently been completed in and around The Hub at Beaman Park as part of the Yeppoon Town Centre Smart Precinct.

Deputy Mayor and Council’s Digital Economy and Innovation Champion Councillor Nigel Hutton said the project was thanks to a $200,000 grant from the Australian Government Smart Cities and Suburbs initiative last year to implement smart cities technology within the Yeppoon Town Centre.

“This project forms part of Council’s commitment to advancing the region’s local economy, attracting investment and increasing jobs while also increasing visitor interaction and attraction and contributing to creating a town centre that’s technologically advanced,” Cr Hutton said.

“The purpose of the grant is to develop the Yeppoon Town Centre Smart Precinct so that it’s “smart”, energy efficient, and safe. Now complete, these new elements within the town centre will encourage the Capricorn Coast region’s business community to embrace smart technology while improving community lifestyle.

“These works will also complement the Centre of Excellence for Disaster Management, Innovation and Community Resilience (The Hub) in the heart of Yeppoon.

“Council would like to thank the Australian Government for its strong funding support towards this important project.”

Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry said she was excited to see how the digital enhancements would assist local businesses and engage the wider community.

“Visitors and residents will get to experience the Yeppoon Town Centre in a new way that offers free access to WiFi, energy efficient street lighting for patrons’ safety, while also using advanced technological capabilities to offer creative and artistic spaces in Beaman Park through the use of digital place making,” Ms Landry said.

“Technology is fast-becoming an important component of how our communities are planned, built and managed today and it’s important to ensure our region’s infrastructure is capable of integrating into the digital age.”
