Planning underway for Leisure and Aquatic Projects

​Planning is underway for the new Leisure and Aquatic Centres, proposed for Canterbury and Revesby.

City of Canterbury Bankstown Mayor, Khal Asfour, said both projects are part of Council’s $170 million commitment to improving leisure and aquatic facilities over the next 15 years.

“I anticipate we will begin engaging with the community next year, so design work can be undertaken,” he said.

“It is critical residents have their say on these important facilities, which will need to meet the needs of the community for decades to come.

“As a result, this process will not be rushed. These facilities will be in place for a significant period of time, so we’re determined to get it right.

“We hope construction will be able to start on both projects within five years.”

The new facilities are part of Canterbury-Bankstown’s Leisure and Aquatic Centre Strategic Plan, which was approved by Council in August, after the majority of residents who provided feedback, supported it. It followed a three-year independent review of CBCity’s leisure and aquatic facilities, which included a lengthy period of community consultation.

Under the plan:

New leisure and aquatic facilities will be constructed at Revesby and Canterbury;The existing Birrong and Roselands Leisure and Aquatic Centres will be upgraded;Wran Leisure and Aquatic Centre will be closed, but only after a new community facility is constructed at Thurina Park, Villawood; andA new water splash park and enhanced play space will be constructed at Roberts Park, replacing Greenacre Leisure and Aquatic Centre.

“I am hoping we will be able to share concept plans for the splash park with the community within the next eight months, so residents can provide their feedback,” Mayor Asfour said.

“This follows extensive research into existing splash parks throughout Australia and I am anticipating construction will start next year.”
