Cr Cynthia Watson elected new Mayor for City of Boroondara

Maranoa Ward Councillor Cynthia Watson has been elected Mayor for the 2019/20 Council year. Councillor Watson’s election as the 24th Mayor for the City of Boroondara was announced at a Civic Reception at the Camberwell Civic Centre on Wednesday evening.

Councillor Watson has lived in Balwyn North since 1999 with her husband and 4 children. Prior to becoming a councillor, Cr Watson had passionately worked for the community to connect and empower people in our great City. 

Cr Watson joined Council to protect our City’s heritage, safeguard our environment from pollution, enhance liveability and to continue building strong bonds and partnerships in our diverse and multicultural community.

The new Mayor is committed to delivering services and infrastructure and acknowledges the work of her predecessors and the community groups, which built Boroondara into a vibrant and harmonious City.

“Boroondara is a special place. I pay tribute to the unique contribution of all who have built and cared for the beautiful City we love,” said Cr Watson.

Like many other families, Cr Watson moved into Boroondara with her husband so their children could attend great local schools and live in a community that places a high value on education and lifelong learning.

“People in Boroondara value learning and many families have moved to Boroondara so their children can attend a great local school and receive a good education. Education powers, empowers and prospers every community with accessible quality education,” said Cr Watson.

Councillor Watson succeeds outgoing Mayor, Maling Ward Councillor Jane Addis who has led an exceptional group of councillors to embark on vital projects such as the Customer First Program, the Food Organics and Garden Organics waste service and the redevelopment of community and recreational centres.

As Mayor, Councillor Watson will lead Council’s implementation of these major projects in 2019/20.

The new Mayor also welcomed Council’s new Committee Chairs:

“The Boroondara community is why I am here. I care about my community and it is my privilege to serve them with my fellow councillors. They are at the heart of everything I do,” said Cr Watson.
