The City of Fremantle is celebrating WA Seniors Week with a program of special events and activities specifically tailored for our aged community.
Seniors Week runs from 11–17 November and is an opportunity for all Western Australians to show their appreciation for older people and acknowledge their invaluable contributions to society.
City of Fremantle Community Development Manager Beverley Bone said Freo’s 2019 Seniors Week program promoted active ageing, health and community wellbeing and participation for people over 55 years young.
“I encourage everyone to take full advantage of the free come and try activities on offer and have fun, learn new skills and meet new friends in the community,” Ms Bone said.
“The City of Fremantle is very proud of its age-friendly city status, and is committed to ensuring older people can live full, healthy lives and remain active in their community.
“Earlier this year, Council adopted the Age Friendly City Plan 2019-2024 which aims to decrease loneliness, increase social participation and volunteering, provide inter-generational and cross-cultural activities and improve communication about services and opportunities for people over the age of 55.”
Seniors Week is a wonderful time for older people to immerse themselves in the many free activities on offer in Fremantle, including Tae kwon do, balance exercises, dragon boat paddling and social walking groups.
Umbrella Multicultural Community Care, Pets of Older Persons (POOPS) and WA Seniors Card are offering free information sessions in Fremantle Library.
This morning, Fremantle Arts Centre launched a monthly Memory Café to provide an inclusive, social setting for people living with dementia, their carers and the wider community.
As always, the Wanjoo Welcome Lounge inside Fremantle Library will be open from 9am-3pm all this week for seniors to come in, meet new friends and enjoy a cuppa with morning tea.
Last week the City of Fremantle won the Partnerships and Collaboration category at the Local Government Professionals WA 2019 Honour Awards for the Dance Hall Days initiative.
Dance Hall Days was a monthly facilitated dance for over 55s which included a one-hour dance lesson, a variety of live bands and a range of dances to encourage everyone to have a go.
