Council Statement Transferring of Council Community services
Council became involved in community services over 20 years ago at a time when there were few if any alternatives. Since Council decided to provide community services there has been a rise in alternative accredited specialist providers (e.g. Anglicare, Valmar). These organisations have the economies of scale to maintain services as the funding environment changes. In addition with a single focus on community services, these organisations are better placed to manage these activities with better results for all users.
Council are currently in negotiations with several alternate service providers who are interested in taking on the Council community services provided that they are endorsed by fund providers.
We are confident that alternate service providers will be found by 31 March 2020 but it is entirely up to the fund providers if they are to be endorsed and what the final timing will be for the transfer. Should these alternate services not be endorsed by the fund providers, Council will look at alternative options in order to keep Community programs running.
In making the decision not to continue being a provider of community services in Yass Valley, Council were very concerned with the impacts on its current clients and staff and have had discussions and workshops to ensure a smooth transition so no one will have access to any lesser service.
