More than 1000 City of Wanneroo residents from 65 countries will become Australian citizens at the country’s largest Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony on Australia Day next year.
The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that the 2020 City of Wanneroo Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony will be the largest in the country for the seventh year in a row.
City of Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said the Australia Day citizenship was indicative of the rich diversity of the area’s residents and the strong sense of community that attracts families.
“The City of Wanneroo has seen exponential growth. We are one of the fastest and largest-growth areas in Australia and one of the most diverse, with 41 per cent of Wanneroo residents born overseas,” said Mayor Roberts.
“Australia Day is a premier event for the City and we are proud to host or promote a number of Australia Day activities from Two Rocks to Girrawheen and right across the 684 square km that stretch across the City’s boundaries.
“The 2020 Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony will be the biggest yet, with over 1000 people attending plus their families, so the atmosphere will be fantastic as it is every year.
“Plus, as a bonus this year, we are putting the big top from the morning’s ceremony to good use for our inaugural Wanneroo Festival, which is a free, family-friendly event developed in close collaboration with the City of Wanneroo’s Multicultural Advisory Group and Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group.
“Then we round out the day’s festivities with the City of Wanneroo fireworks at 8pm. That means people can enjoy a full day of celebration in the spirit of community, inclusion, respect and learning about other cultures,” Mayor Roberts said.
New citizens start the day at the Wanneroo Showgrounds with a traditional Australia Day barbecue breakfast led by the local Wanneroo Scouts, followed by the official ceremony at 9.30am.
