Racegoers will flock to Cloncurry and District Race Club on Saturday for the biggest social event of the year. Derby Day marks the close of the Cloncurry racing season, but has already attracted large nominations with 42 horses listed across five races in an attempt to claim their portion of the $43,000 prize money up for grabs. Club sponsorship and marketing coordinator Hilary Keyes said Derby Day had always been the most popular race meeting with an excess of 700 locals attending. "Some people wait all year for this event," Ms Keyes said. "Derby Day provides an opportunity for everyone to come together from town, cattle station and surrounds and catch up before Christmas. "The theme is traditionally black and white, which everyone gets into and makes fashions on the field competition very popular and competitive with big prize money up for grabs." Gates will open at 11.30am with the first race to commence from 1.30pm. There will be live entertainment in the afternoon from solo musician, Sean Williams from 3pm.
