Council News 13 November 2019

Thursday, 21 November 2019 will see Council take a significant step into the technological world with Council’s Monthly meeting being webcast on Council’s website for the first time.

The Model Meeting Code of Practice provides that all meetings of Councils and Committees whose membership comprises only of Councillors should be webcast to increase the transparency of council decision making and to allow access to those who may not be physically able to attend meetings.  This does not apply to parts of meetings that have been closed to the public under section 10A of the Act.  The live streaming and subsequent uploading to Council’s website of our Council Meetings is very exciting and a major step in Council becoming a more modern and progressive organisation.

Residents are able to view the Council meeting on-line at www.weddin.nsw.gov.au

The 2020 Henry Lawson Festival (HLF) will be held from the 4 – 8 June 2020 and planning is underway with the Festival Annual General Meeting (AGM) being held Tuesday 29 October, 2019.

While all of the executive positions were not filled a number of the co-ordinator positions were which was very encouraging.  The next HLF Committee meeting will be held on Tuesday, 26 November, 2019 and residents are encouraged to attend the meeting and consider taking on an executive or co-ordinator role to assist in conducting the 2020 festival.

Regional Digital Connectivity Program Community Consultation sessions were conducted in Grenfell on 5/6 November 2019 and were very informative and very well attended.

The NSW Liberals and Nationals Government is investing $400 million through the Snowy Hydro Legacy Fund to address poor internet and mobile coverage for people living in regional NSW and these sessions afforded the convenors the opportunity to obtain feedback from residents on where and how these funds could be allocated.  Residents were able to advise the convenors of connectivity issues they were experiencing in regards to internet and mobile coverage particularly in rural areas of the Shire.  Residents are encouraged to have a further say by completing a survey at https://tinyurl.com/ConnectRegional Hard copy surveys are available by visiting www.nsw.gov.au/connectregionalnsw or by contacting Council’s Economic Development Officer Auburn Carr Email or Ph: 6343 2855.

Representatives from the Western NSW Local Health District inspected the Grenfell Aquatic Centre on the 28th October, 2019.  The inspection revealed that the pool was being operated in accordance with the NSW Public Health Regulation 2012, which is tremendous and a real credit to all the staff concerned.

Residents may be aware that Council submitted an entry in the LGNSW AR Bluett Memorial Award in July 2019 however, unfortunately we were unsuccessful.

This year’s successful Regional Council was Shellharbour City Council, while Bourke Shire Council was the winner of the Rural Category.

Council at its October 2019 meeting resolved to submit an entry for the 2020 Award.

Residents are advised that the Community Hub toilets will be painted this week.  This will happen after hours to allow the toilets to be used during the daytime.  Council apologises for any inconvenience caused.

The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSWRFS) is reminding residents within the Forbes, Lachlan, Condobolin and Weddin Local Government Areas (LGA’s) that permits are required during the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period, which officially began on 1 October 2019.

From now until the end of the Bush Fire Danger Period, people wishing to light a fire in the open will require a permit, which are free and can be obtained from your local fire station or Fire Control Centre.  When conditions are particularly bad, such as on days of Very High Fire Danger and above, the NSW RFS may declare a Total Fire Ban, prohibiting the lighting of any fire in the open, even if you have a fire permit.

Further information is available at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au  Locals can also call the Mid Lachlan Valley Fire Control Centre on (02) 6851 1541 or the Bushfire Information Line on 1800 NSW RFS (1800 679 737)

The current exhibition at the Grenfell Art Gallery is “Earth and Water” by Annie Joseph and Graham Watt and is on display until 1 December, 2019.

Annie Joseph’s art is in watercolour, charcoal, pen and wash, and acrylics. She mostly draws inspiration from the landscape around her whether in her heartland of the Central West of NSW or further afield in Portugal, France, Ireland or Scotland!

Graham Watt’s pots are hand formed using pinching and coiling techniques. They are then pit fired using a combination of cyprus pine, kurrajong, sawdust, cow dung, copper sulphate and seaweed. His pots are made from commercial and locally sourced clay.

The Art Gallery is open Monday to Friday 10am - 4pm, Saturday 10am - 3pm & Sunday 10am -2pm.

The next movies at the Cinema will be held in December and arrangements are in progress.
